AVAILABLE POSITIONS
Position Overview:
Our team is seeking Mechanical Estimators within both the Sheet Metal & Piping Trades, for our Sacramento Special Projects office. This candidate must have an entrepreneurial mindset with an excellent ability to collaborate with peers and customers. The Mechanical Estimator works directly with the Special Projects team to develop business and evaluate opportunities, provide takeoffs, estimates and proposals.
Lawson Special Projects Division specializes in quick response, quick deliverable projects with fast duration construction schedules. This position requires excellent attention to detail with the ability to estimate various sized projects ranging from retrofits and repairs to medium sized construction projects.
This candidate must be highly analytical, with the ability to summarize complex information into detailed proposals, keeping up to date with current building codes and industry best practices.
JOB DUTIES INCLUDE:
ESTIMATING DUTIES
- Identify target opportunities by reviewing incoming invitations to bid.
- Attend project walks and perform initial review of field conditions.
- Download contract documents for review including plans, specifications and associated documents.
- Send contract documents to all required vendors and subcontractors for pricing.
- Create detailed takeoff’s using Quickpen software for entry into estimate.
- Work with the Special Projects Division Manager in order to assess risk through bid review and analysis.
- Identify potential scope and design gaps at the time of estimate.
- Ability to work closely with engineering team and General Foremen to provide solutions and value engineering options.
- Review and vet all vendor proposals for accuracy and adherence to the contract documents. Constant follow-up until bids are received.
- Ability to clearly define scope, inclusions and exclusions in a detailed proposal letter.
- Follow-up with the customer after bid is submitted.
- Attend production meetings to update the project team on status of future and past bids.
- Assist the projects team with pricing of change orders.
CUSTOMER MANAGEMENT
- Excellent follow through when selecting or passing on opportunities.
- Responsible for maintaining and expanding new and existing customer relationships.
- Maintain relationships with new facilities and general contractors.
- Assists the sales team with preparation of responses to RFPs and RFQs.
- Ability to develop and negotiate new business through consistent communication.
- Maintain bid tracking and monitor backlog for reporting within division sales projections.
REQUIRED ABILITY/SKILL
- 5+ years’ experience estimating mechanical systems.
- Ability to read and understand detailed plans and project specifications.
- Attention to detail and accuracy are essential and take priority.
- Understanding of conceptual estimating and HVAC systems.
- Exceptional communication skills when working with customers, field leaders and project managers, a high level of professionalism is required.
- Competent with various software programs such as Word, Excel, Autobid, Outlook and Bluebeam.
- Adept at conducting research, gathering and organizing information from multiple sources.
- Skill to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a quick response environment.
- Outstanding time management skills are necessary.
- Strong written and oral communication abilities.
- Professional, ethical, team player with eagerness to learn and grow with the division.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Bachelor’s degree in Business, Construction Management, estimating or equivalent experience a plus but not required.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
While performing the essential function of this job, employees are regularly required to sit for long periods. Regularly required to attend project walks outside of office.

Salary Range
Pay is determined by the education, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities of an applicant. For this role, the current range is $90,000 - $135,000 per year.
